The Last Time

The crickets were chirping loudly, accompanied by the occasional croak from a frog. The kids had been asleep for about an hour, John had gone home after dinner, but Lacey remained in the pool. She loved being in the water.

She was lounging on the slope, her hands folded beneath her head, her eyes closed, and a lazy smile on her face.

I gradually strode along the side of the pool, raking my sight over her, the water rippling around her as she bent a leg, swaying it side to side.

I shoved my hands in my pockets, my head tipped as I crept closer unsuspectingly. A cool breeze swept down from the front of the house, wafting over us. Her skin broke out in goosebumps, her nipples hardening under the top.

My feet suddenly lead, I came to a halt, my heart banging on my ribs. I never got used to just how sexy she was. No matter how many years we were together, I still sometimes caught a glimpse of her and was momentarily struck with awe at her beauty, and that she was mine.

We could be walking through a grocery store, doing mundane, everyday tasks. I would reach over to grab an item off a shelf, glimpse her way, and boom! A fist would slam into my chest, knocking my pulse into a frenzy, and I would be frozen, just staring at her as if I were seeing her for the first time, falling in love all over.

Those same emotions were overwhelming me right now and I was struggling with all my willpower to fight it. I had not yet decided if I was capable of forgiving this woman for what she did to me and our family. She was untrustworthy now. She disrespected our promises to one another to always be true.

Respect was such an important part of who I was to my core, and she ruined it. It was blemished, forever. It would always be there. How did I overlook that?

Clearing my throat to announce my presence, she merely lifted her lashes to peek at me. Her smile broadened.

“Hi. I thought you went to bed.”

“I was. I am. I just…I wanted to apologize…to you.”

Her brows furrowed, her bottom lip puckering. “For what?”

Tossing a thumb over my shoulder, I stammered, “The gym. I promised it would all be done in a week, and it’s been two, and it’s not done.”

The smile returned, her lids lowering. Filling her lungs, her chest puffed out, making those beautiful hard nipples strain over the wet material of her swimsuit.

My brows arched and I groaned, my cock stirring. God, I wanted to touch her like I used to. I wanted to hold her and make love to her.

“It’s okay. I don’t mind sleeping on the sofa.”

“Yeah, but…I mean, two weeks.”

She giggled, keeping her eyes closed. “Well, if you and John would stop letting yourselves get distracted almost every day, y’all would probably be done by now.”

I chuckled, daring to move closer. “I swear that man has the attention span of a goldfish.
